A theory of computer semiotics - semiotic approaches to construction and assessement of computer systems

چکیده

Semiotics also includes the general principles that underlie all sign systems. It is thus more comprehensive than linguistics--very much more, because there is a semiotic dimension to practically every human artifact. (Indeed, since we can 'read in' meanings to natural events, e.g., as in 'the lack of rain shows God's displeasure,' semiotics is not even limited to human artifacts.) In recent years there has been a rapid growth of interest in the ways that humans and machines may communicate with each other by the use of modes and codes other than written natural language text. For example, one theme of the recent International Natural Language Generation Workshop at Trento was the 'extension of language generation to multiple media.' Relevant contributions in Dale et al. (1992) include the chapters by Claasen and Reithinger on pointing and, perhaps more futuristically, Magnenat-Thalmann and Kalra's "A model for creating and visualizing speech and emotion." There was a panel discussion with published statements by Arens, Dale, Kerpedjiev, Stock, and Wahlster et al. Earlier works in this line of development include Taylor, Neel, and Boushuis (1989); the account of COMET (CoOrdinated Multimedia Explanation Testbed) by McKeown and her colleagues (McKeown et al. 1990); and the descriptions by Wahlster and his colleagues (Wahlster et al. 1989, 1992 and references therein) of their multi-media system, WIP. So computational semiotics should be an idea whose time has come or, at least, whose time is coming.

Hypertext Semiotics in the Commercialized Internet

Hypertext theory makes use of the same set of terms that have been explored in decades of semiotic investigation, such as sign, text, communication, code, metaphor, paradigm, syntax, etc. Building on approaches that have succeeded in applying semiotic principles and methodology to computer science, such as computer semiotics, computational semiotics, and semiotic interface engineering, this dis...

Approach to Semiotic Theory of Computer Visualization

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the Semiotic approach to forming of Theory of Computer Visualization. Such theory (or rather theories) should be the foundation of design, development, and evaluations of specialized visualization systems. The semiotic analysis of visualization is defined. The paper contains the scheme of the semiotics analysis during designing of visualization systems. T...

Computer Semiotics

This paper presents semiotics as a framework for unders tanding and designing computer systems as sign systems. Although semiotic methods can be applied to all levels of computer systems, they view computer systems under a particular perspective, namely as targets of interpretations. When we need to see c o m p u t e r systems as automata, semiotics has little to offer. The main focus of the pa...

The Semiotic Pentagram Framework - A perspective on the use of Semiotics within Organisational Semiotics

Organisational Semiotics (OS) aims to provide new methodologies, techniques and tools to the development of information systems and organisations by applying semiotic theories and studies, therefore offering a new perspective on the field, which incorporates technical and social aspects. In order to apply semiotics to Information Systems (IS) and Information technology (IT) different approaches...

Semiotics of Programming

This book provides a semiotic analysis of computer programs along three axes: models of signs, kinds of signs, and systems of signs. Since computer programs are well defined and rigid, applying semiotic theories to them will help to reorganize the semiotic theories themselves. Moreover, semiotic discussion of programming theory can provide possible explanations for why programming has developed...
